British Athletics League 2018


The British Athletics League is a track and field male team's competition, the most important in the United Kingdom for history and number of teams.


Launched in 1969, the British Athletics League had in 2013 five different divisions, which gather a total of 38 track and field teams from all over the United Kingdom, although most of them come from England.


The league structure is as follows:

·         Premiership

·         First Division

·         Second Division

·         Third Division

·         Fourth Division


Chelmsford are in Division 3, with:

·          Enfield & Haringey AC
·          Trafford AC
·          Nene Valley Harriers

The club may enter an ‘A string’ and a ‘B string’ athlete in all events. 

Two competitors are allowed per club in each individual event and one team per club in each relay.


An athlete may compete in a maximum of seven events - for this purpose competing in a relay is regarded as an event.


Athletes MUST be registered to compete in the BAL. The British League very strict on this and do not allow non-registered athletes to compete. The club has to submit a list of our athletes to the BAL in March, and this is rigorously checked.


Each fixture will include:


·         100 metres

·         200 metres

·         400 metres

·         800 metres

·         1500 metres

·         either 3000 metres or 5000 metres

·         110m Hurdles

·         400m Hurdles

·         3000 Steeplechase

·         High Jump

·         Long Jump

·         Triple Jump

·         Shot Putt

·         Pole Vault

·         Discus Throw

·         Hammer Throw

·         Javelin Throw

·         4 x 100m Relay

·         4 x 400m Relay



'A' strings and relays - 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4

'B' strings - 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1


1st team 8 points; 2nd team 7 points; 3rd team 6 points; 4th team 5 points etc
