Jess Hopkins was in record-breaking form at the English Schools Combined Events Championships at Bedford over the weekend. Not only did she take individual Gold in the Intermediate Girls Heptathlon, but she broke her own Chelmsford club record at the event, eclipsing the mark she made exactly a year ago – her score of 5127 being the sixth highest of all time, and taking her to the top of the 2018 UK rankings.
Not content with that, Jess also broke a 33 year old club record in the Javelin, with a throw of 42.14m, also won the Shot – and set PB’s in the 200m and High Jump.
She teamed up with club mate Mia Chantree to lead the Essex to team victory in the Intermediate Heptathlon – with the second highest team score of all time! Also in the team were ex club mates, Holly Lawrence and Hannah Bardo.
Mia put in some excellent performances of her own – recording PB’s in the Shot, Javelin and High Jump (in which she finished in equal first place) – to end the competition in a fine fifth place over all, with 5047 points (a PB).
Oliver Early matched Mia’s feat, with fifth place in the Junior Boys Pentathlon, with a score of 2823. He recorded PB’s on the 800m and 80mH – and achieved equal first place in the High Jump.
Jess Whiley was in action in the Senior Girls Heptathlon, but was unfortunately not able to complete all of her events.
